FAQs on IHI Travel Coverage

All international students who are currently residing in Canada have access to full travel benefits.

What is country of origin travel?

  1. This refers to travel to your country of origin, for some students this will be your country of citizenship.
  2. If you are a dual citizen, your country of origin will be the country where you were last residing before entering Canada.

How long am I covered for travelling in my country of origin?

You are only covered for emergencies resulting in hospitalization (must be admitted as an in-patient), up to $2,000 CAD per day for all services combined as specified in the Medavie Blue Cross contract.

What is Leisure Travel?

This refers to any travel, for leisure purposes, outside of Canada and outside your country of origin.

How long am I covered by IHI for Leisure Travel?

  1. Up to 4 consecutive weeks per trip: You are covered for emergency medical expenses and hospitalization.
  2. More than 4 consecutive weeks: You are only covered for emergencies resulting in hospitalization (must be admitted as an in-patient), up to $2,000 CAD funds per day for all services combined as specified in the Medavie Blue Cross contract.

 What are University Sanctioned Activities?

University sanctioned international activities include:

  1. Curricular activities (i.e., credit or non-credit course work, exchange programs, field work, music performances and research).
  2. Or co-curricular activities (e.g. University funded internships, varsity sports) that are officially approved or endorsed by °Ä¿Í¾º²Ê and for which international travel is an essential part of the activity, whether or not the student is pursuing the activity for academic credit or recognition, or receives University or third-party funding.

What are NOT University Sanctioned Activities?

University sanctioned international activities exclude:

  1. Activities sponsored or organized by student clubs or associations,
  2. Activities organized solely by a student or group of students.

  1. Yes, you are covered for University Sanctioned Activities outside of Québec in Canada.

  1. Yes, ONLY if you are participating in a University Sanctioned Activity outside of Canada in a country other than Canada or your country of origin.
