If you were working on your WMS site in the beginning of April, you likely noticed the day that went mostly offline for a few hours, and the days following that may have generated intermittent errors or problems loading pages. We really appreciate your patience while we were finding the solution.
What has caused these issues?
This is not a problem unique to °Ä¿Í¾º²Ê. One of the complexities of our changing technological landscape is the increased need for security measures on all websites to stop unwanted traffic. On that day in April, the issues we experienced were due to an overwhelming amount of connections to the WMS all at once. We resolved the issues by implementing security measures to stop that traffic, and were successful in restoring the site to visitors and site content creators. Because we had to implement this solution quickly, we didn't have enough time to test the measures one by one, which led to legitimate traffic also being intermittently blocked in the days that followed. These filters are complex and we need to fine tune them to make sure that legitimate traffic is still allowed, while unwanted traffic is blocked.
What is unwanted traffic?
Unwanted traffic is what we often refer to as "bots". These are programs that are designed to load pages on a website, using the resources intended for your human visitors. Legitimate traffic is made up of the real people visiting , and the Site managers and editors who are working on their sites. We need to carefully calibrate the filters so they can recognize when a person is clicking a lot on a site (for example a site manager who is making several changes), or a bot that is trying to scrape information. The only way to do this calibration is to test the measures, and make adjustments based on the result.
We expect that this new level of security is going to keep us dancing for the long term, and this is where we would love your help.
Report an issue
If you experience any of the symptoms listed below when working with the WMS, we want to know about it! This will help us recognize when our security measures need to be adjusted.
Here is a link to the form for the WMS. Choose the category "Content blocked by network security rules" to help us identify the issue.
Symptoms of content blocked by network security rules:
- Error messages when viewing a page that include the phrase "Your support ID is" or "Support ID number".
- The page is missing the styling (the page looks like a list of links), or missing images.
- The WYSIWYG editor or other interactive components are not working.
- °Ä¿Í¾º²Ê Search returns no results
- °Ä¿Í¾º²Ê Profiles list pages or other site pages don't load.
Information to include in your report:
- Take a screenshot if you can.
- Copy and paste the text of the error message including the support ID if it is included.
- Let us know if you are on campus or working remotely (with or without VPN).
- Your IP address (if working remotely, not on VPN). You can check this at .
Encountering issues? Try these workarounds
- If you are working on your site remotely, logging into VPN typically results in fewer errors.
- Problems appear to be intermittent, so using a different browser and waiting until later are strategies that can help you make your changes.
